Tooth removal at Brookvale & Merrifield
Sometimes extraction is the best way to relieve pain when a tooth can't be saved through filling or root canal treatment, or when your dentist needs to create space before starting orthodontic treatment.
At Brookvale & Merrifield, we’ll make sure you don’t have to wait for a tooth extraction, and we'll see you as soon as possible to help relieve your pain. You’ll have local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable, and we’ll give you thorough aftercare instructions afterwards.

Why might I need a tooth removed?
Extraction is always our last resort, and we'll explore every way to save the tooth first. Common reasons for removal include:
- Severe decay or infection that can't be treated with a filling or root canal
- A badly damaged tooth from an accident or trauma
- Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain or infection
- Creating space before orthodontic treatment
- Advanced gum disease affecting the tooth's stability
Wisdom teeth are the most common cause for tooth removals, especially if they’re impacted, causing crowding, or leading to repeated infections. If you're not sure whether extraction is right for you, you can always get in touch for a chat.

What to expect when you come in for tooth removal
Your consultation
Whether your tooth extraction is due to a dental emergency, or planned ahead of time, we’ll start with a thorough examination and X-rays if necessary.
The appointment
On the day, we'll numb the area with a local anaesthetic, so you won't feel pain, though you may feel some gentle pressure as the tooth is carefully loosened and removed.
Going forward
We’ll give you instructions covering what to eat, how to keep the area clean, and what to look out for as you heal. We always call patients the day after to check in, too.
How much does a tooth extraction cost?
The cost of tooth extractions vary depending on which tooth needs to be removed and why. We maintain up-to-date pricing guidelines on our pricing page, but you’ll also receive a clear breakdown of all costs during your consultation, before we move ahead with your extraction.

Do I need to have my tooth removed?
You may need an extraction if you have a tooth that is:
- Painful
- Loose
- Broken
- Swollen around the gun
We’ll always look into other options (like a filling or a root canal) before recommending a tooth extraction.
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, contact us so we can assess what’s going on. The sooner we can examine your tooth, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to save the tooth.
